Power from pain

Research shows that when most people reach a new level of happiness or success they have almost invariably gone through a more challenging time to get there. Time and time again people report that before any breakthrough they have undergone some kind of more difficult, tougher time. When one delves deeper it usually turns out that the way they managed to crack a new skill, or solve a life issue, was to look at what the challenging emotions, feelings or habits were, and work through them to get to a better place. Working through them like this is very different from avoiding or resisting them (and hoping they go away); ignoring them and pretending everything is OK (when inside it really isn’t); or just exploding with the emotions to the detriment of themselves and the people around them. Working through the pain is what allows us to grow – when we attempt to understand why it is there, where it stems from, and what it might be telling us about ourselves, our values and our lives – we have the potential to truly be free of it. More can be understood about this process in the ‘Defuse It’ section of the MIND MOT. Read more

Programs

In order to successfully operate in a complex world we develop programs for different situations. Much like a computer has programs for all kinds of professional and personal needs, our inner mind has thousands of programs for every eventuality – from tying a shoelace to dealing with conflict. Most of these programs, or mental habits, are incredibly sophisticated and brilliantly useful and we can learn to harness them even more to succeed further in every area of our life. Some of them however have become redundant – or worse, actually cause us repeated problems that can be quite damaging. Read more

Projection & Projecting

When we see things in the world around us we always see them as we perceive them – we don’t see things as they are; we see things as we think they are. This is an unavoidable part of the being a human being and it has been shown to happen in all areas of life, even in the hardest sciences. Our brain works in a way where it looks for things it knows. For example if you have never seen or heard of a motor car then you cannot see it the same way someone who drives one does. This is pretty obvious stuff. However what is less obvious is that we also see things in our life that we are familiar with – but may not necessarily be in someone else’s mind. This is called projecting. Imagine we have been really upset by a colleague who doesn’t seem to be pulling their weight, and we think they do it on purpose to spite us. We are likely to feel this if, say, someone we know avoids challenging tasks on purpose, or if, in general, we often feel like we have been wronged. However it is entirely likely that our colleague didn’t know the extent of what was expected of them, or made a mistake (and might well be really sorry about it). Read more

Response-able

When we are fully response-able we have the ability to respond creatively, usefully and positively to any situation. The key to having this ability is being prepared to own every situation we find ourselves in – or own as much as we can of the experience. The more we own it, the more power we have to do something different, to create another way forward that is beneficial to us. Read more

Reframing

This is a very powerful tool that allows us to instantly enjoy more empowering and inspirational experiences everyday. When we reframe something we take what we might have felt was a ‘negative’ experience and turn it into a positive one by using it for our development, growth and long-term fulfilment. Read more

Responsible

When we are fully response-able we have the ability to respond creatively, usefully and positively to any situation.
